Ask Dr.H: The Best Vitamins

I saw a new patient in the office this morning. She complained of being tired all the time. She was promoted in her job but unfortunately she had to work the night shift. Since the change she has gained 30 pounds. Her relationship with her kids and husband are strained because she is too tired to engage her family. She has not exercised since the promotion.

The first question she asked was what vitamins she could take to get her energy levels back. I get asked this a lot. The answer is that the best and most potent vitamins come in food. The foods loaded with vitamins are vegetables, especially the dark green leafy vegetables with fiber. But to get the full complement of vitamins you need to eat all the vegetables and add some nuts in moderation.

She agreed to do an experiment with me, For the next 48 hours she will eat a “whole food plant diet.” No animal products, no eggs, no dairy, no processed foods of any kind, and no sugar, She is allowed fresh fruit and she will try to find organic produce.
