As temperatures steadily decline this time of year, so does our exposure to our beloved sunlight- which is where our bodies get 80-90% of Vitamin D! If you fall in the post menopausal category, it is extremely important to take a supplement if you are not getting enough of this vitamin. The onset of menopause can bring several health challenges for women, including increased risk of osteoporosis, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Several studies have shown that having adequate blood levels of Vitamin D can offset many of these health risks. Vitamin D3 deficiency is a common problem in postmenopausal women worldwide, creating muscle weakness and a greater tendency for falling. A new study documents that vitamin D3 supplementation can significantly increase muscle strength and reduce the loss of body muscle mass in women post-menopause. At the end of the trial, the women receiving the D3 demonstrated a significant increase (+25.3%) in muscle strength, while those receiving the placebo actually lost an average of 6.8% of muscle mass. Women not receiving Vitamin D supplements were also nearly two times as likely to fall.
